Westbury Leigh Art
Art is the expression or application of our creativity in developing ideas or responding to the work of others, using the world around us as a stimulus and learning about and from the work of other artists and designers.
Our curriculum will:
- inspire children to learn about themselves and their place in the global community
- aspire to be challenging, relevant and meaningful
- achieve the best outcome for every child
Intent: Children should learn about a wide variety of artists and crafts-people from around the world and over the centuries. Through learning about these artists, children acquire the skills and mediums practised by the artist, the significance of these choices, and the impact they had on their society at the time, or continue to have on us now. Learning about this should impact on the learning of the topic overall.
Implementation: Staff should follow the model of progression through an art unit which works through appreciation of an existing piece, understanding how component parts work, designing and sketching own ideas and applying this to learnt skills in a final piece. Sketchbooks should be used throughout a unit of art as a means of recording ideas, practising methods and skills, and designing a final outcome, as well as critiquing artists and evaluating at the end of a unit.
Impact: children will be able to make strong links between the art and artists studied and their topic. This should be evident in their sketchbooks, through pupil voice and in their final outcome. They should be able to articulate an opinion about the artist using critiquing skills. They will be reflective and able to explain what was successful for them and what would they change next time.
