The revised National Curriculum stresses the importance of ensuring SMSC development is explored through other curriculum subjects. We aim to:
- Inspire children to learn about themselves and their place in the global community.
- Aspire to be challenging, relevant and meaningful.
- Achieve the best outcomes for every child.
Intent: At Westbury Leigh CE Primary, we recognise that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally (SMSC) plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. We therefore aim to provide an education that provides pupils with opportunities to explore and develop:
- their own values and beliefs alongside others
- spiritual awareness through experience, reflection and transformation that inspires and aspires
- high standards of personal behaviour and regard for the rule of law
- recognition of own and others role in bringing about change and development
- a positive, caring and tolerant attitude towards other people and wider awareness of the diversity of the world
- an understanding of their own and others social and cultural traditions and expectations
- an awareness and appreciation of the diversity and richness of wide ranging cultures
Implementation: SMSC is taught through the curriculum and identified on the curriculum map; alongside this opportunities to promote this are explored through wider school operating. By teaching SMSC within a context children embed their understanding of the world around them and understand better the diversity of society and how this impacts what has gone before and shapes the future.
Impact: The impact of SMSC will be seen in the quality of language, discussion and actions that children take and refer to in their learning and life choices. We will continually review subject progression, pedagogy and the SOW to ensure delivery of rich and sticky knowledge which also enables development of key life skills, such as communication, understanding, tolerance, respect, courage and responsibility through critical analysis. We want children to aspire not to have more but to be more.
