Westbury Leigh Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
At Westbury Leigh Primary School we hold the health, wellbeing and personal development of the children in our care amongst our highest priorities. It is a priority that arises both out of the responsibility we bear for our pupils as whole and rounded individuals and out of recognition that physical and emotional health forms the essential foundation for successful learning.
Our curriculum will:
- inspire children to learn about themselves and their place in the global community
- aspire to be challenging, relevant and meaningful
- achieve the best outcome for every child
We want children to grow up as informed and responsible adults. The overall objective of Relationships and Health Education is to help and support our children through their physical, emotional, social and moral development. This will enable children to learn to respect themselves and others and move with confidence from childhood through to adolescence and then to adulthood.
Intent: We aim to provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills inspiring them to reach their potential as individuals and within their community through educating them about issues in the world around them as well as a chance for pupils to explore their own interests. We want them to lead healthy social lives with a strong sense of their own personal development.
Implementation: We will ensure all staff understand the context of the learning and the disciplines within each unit so that learning takes place in a meaningful context and ensuring it is revisited frequently so all children, no matter their starting point or background recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their learning. Children will be taught about personal development including mental and physical wellbeing alongside aspects of social and emotional development and a sense of citizenship.
Impact: We will regularly review and evaluate the learning that is taking place through a clear understanding of age related expectations and what this looks like first hand, in books and through learning outcomes; we will seek to ensure there are rich opportunities and experiences to promote British values. Our vision is to enable children not to want more but to be more.

PANTS – The Underwear Rule:
Talking PANTS teaches children important messages, like their body belongs to them and they should tell an adult if they're upset or worried. Using age appropriate language, PANTS allows parents to have difficult conversations around sexual abuse without even mentioning the word ‘sex’.
